Developing active participants for the future in sport and physically demanding activities through PE
PE enables and inspires all pupils to have a will to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect whilst enabling pupils to lead healthy, active lives.
P.E within the Calderdale Village Schools Federation is an essential part of the week. We provide a high-quality curriculum that aims to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sports or other physically demanding activities. Each child will participate in at least 2 hours of P.E per week. Alongside this, a lunchtime sports provision will run in order to showcase the children’s abilities in a wide variety of activities. Throughout the curriculum, we will provide all children with opportunities to compete in sport and take part in other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. Due to our mixed year groups in Class 1, 2 and 3, we operate on a two-year cycle ensuring all the skills for their year are covered before they move on to the next class.
The curriculum will allow the children to develop their fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident in order to extend their levels of agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) physical activities in a range of challenging situations.
Pupils will be taught how to:
- master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.
- participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.
- perform dances using simple movement patterns
Children will continue to develop and apply a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in a variety of ways and how to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success. Alongside in school, children in Class 3 will take part in 1 full term of Swimming each year at Sowerby Bridge Pool and Fitness Centre where the children will learn the essential water safety skills, swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres and use a range of strokes effectively (for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke).
Pupils will be taught how to:
- use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
- play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
- develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
- perform dances using a range of movement patterns
- take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
- compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
Both Key Stages
The children are given many opportunities to showcase their abilities at competitive sporting events. The federation has an excellent relationship with the local Calderdale School Games Programme who provide a full timetable of events across the year. Children also have daily opportunities to take part in sports clubs at lunchtimes as part of our school coaching programme.
