Developing languages for the future
Learning a foreign language, French, will open our children’s minds to other cultures, fostering curiosity and deepening their understanding of the world. Children will be able to express their ideas and thoughts, both in speech and in writing. Children will learn to communicate for practical purposes, building the foundation for learning further languages, equipping them to study and work in other countries.
At our school, children begin learning French from Class 3 (Year 4). Our aim is to develop pupils’ confidence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while fostering curiosity about other languages and cultures.
French lessons are taught regularly each week and follow a progressive curriculum (Kapow) that builds knowledge and skills over time. Children learn through songs, games, stories, role play, and interactive activities, helping them to develop accurate pronunciation and a growing bank of vocabulary.
As pupils progress, they are introduced to simple grammar, sentence structures, and written language, enabling them to express ideas more independently. Lessons provide regular opportunities for speaking and listening, with increasing expectations for reading and writing as confidence grows.
Cultural awareness is woven throughout the curriculum. Children learn about French traditions, celebrations, and everyday life, helping them to understand similarities and differences between cultures.
Assessment is ongoing and informal, focusing on participation, confidence, and use of language. This supports teachers in adapting lessons to ensure all pupils are challenged and supported.
By the end of primary school, pupils will have developed a secure foundation in French, preparing them well for further language learning at secondary school.
